TOTAL and BASF Donate $110,000 to Charities through Miracle Match for Life Golf Tournament
Representatives from TOTAL and BASF presented checks totaling $110,000 to representatives of the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, LifeShare Blood Centers and the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program. The funds were raised at the 2015 Miracle Match for Life golf tournament.
Beaumont native Joe Tolin, a bone marrow donor whose simple cheek swab taken two years ago by the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor program was the guest of honor at the event. His DNA was a match for Cami Carver, a nine-year-old girl in Salt lake City, Utah who was battling Leukemia, and his donation saved her life.
“Stories like this are exactly why we do these fundraising efforts,” said Cindy Westfall, Total’s representative at the event. “It is part of our DNA at Total to partner with communities where we live and work, and this is such a worthy cause.”
Founded in 2002, Miracle Match for Life is a collaborative partnership of TOTAL and BASF. This philanthropic initiative has raised more than $1.3 million though its benefit golf tournament. Proceeds have furthered regional participation of marrow and blood donations and breast cancer screenings and prevention in Southeast Texas.
Donations and screenings tend to be less prevalent in the African American, Native American, and Hispanic communities. Heightened awareness of the services offered by the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, Lifeshare Blood Centers, and the Gift of Life program is shared with these and other populations to encourage them to utilize the services that are available.
